Recently I read from Paul Graham,
All parents tend to be more conservative for their kids than they would for themselves, simply because, as parents, they share risks more than rewards.
and I've found the principle there sort of applies elsewhere. It's very easy
to get advice from people that makes sense to them because of the opposite:
they don't share in the risk but at least if you win they'll be happy. This
isn't a malicious thing, it's just something to consider when people give
I've also found it helpful in talking to my parents and not just assuming
they don't understand me.
